Lent Art Installation 2016

Each year the Art Installation at Southwark Cathedral takes us to a very different place. This year, British artist and sculptor Peter Burke creates ‘Earthworks’, a site-specific installation of works encouraging us to go back to the creation story and connect with the very stuff beneath our feet.

Both beautifully crafted and deeply evocative, Burke’s sculpted hands, feet, faces and torsos make us think about this ‘earthy’ nature that we share. His group of works are a meditation on the relationship between people, a sense of place and the earth. Each piece has been made from the variety of soils/earths within a 20 mile radius of Peter's home in Bradford-upon-Avon, with their rich association with underlying geology, history and society. For his subjects, Peter has worked with people that have a connection with this particular area. In this time of awareness of the fragility of our environment and way of life, it is perhaps a good time to refer back to the basics of life, to people and our natural resources.

'Earthworks' will show from 10 February - 24 March, 2016 at the Southwark Cathedral near London Bridge. A self-guided meditative trail of the artworks will be available as well as a scheduled Artist Talk (details below).

Southwark Cathedral

Southwark stands at the oldest crossing point of the tidal Thames at what was the only entrance to the City of London across the river for many centuries. It is the oldest cathedral church building in London, and archaeological evidence shows there was Roman pagan worship on location before the Cathedral was built.
