Christie’s New York set a historical record-breaking sale of $852m during a Post-War and Contemporary Art evening sale. This ground breaking evening were the iconic Andy Warhol Tripe Elvis, 1960 sold for $81.9m, this evening which was full of art from the worlds leading contemporary artists: Roy Lichenstein, Jeff Koons and Cy Twombly.
An astonishing 75 of the 80 lots on offer found buyers, although this is understandable considering the artworks on sale were the masterworks of the artists on sale. With such success, the question being raised is how soon will we see an auction sale that meets the billion dollar mark, especially considering that Christie’s themselves within the last year have had two record breaking sales.
