Contemporary art continues to demand high market prices in London as Sotheby’s recent July 1, 2015 auction raised a record-high £130.4m with works by Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud.
Leading sales was Warhol’s ‘One Dollar Bill (Silver Certificate)’, outperforming its pre-sale estimate of £13m-18m, selling for £20.9m. This sale follows the recent Christie’s sale of ‘Colored Mona Lisa’, which fetched just over £36m, indicating a steadily growing market demand for Warhols.
Hand painted in 1962, ‘One Dollar Bill (Silver Certificate)’ is completely unique and ranks amongst Warhol’s most important and popular works. Pre-dating his infamous 1975 quote “I like money on the wall”, the work is a perfect example of the artist’s fascination with consumption, wealth and status.
Another interesting highlight of the auction came from two newly discovered self-portraits by Francis Bacon. The works have never been exhibited publicly and raised a combined sale price of £30m.
Andipa Gallery is now showing a retrospective collection of iconic works by Andy Warhol including selective works from his early to late career.
