As lockdown continues, and presumably quarantined like many of us, Banksy has taken to working from home in his latest work posted on Instagram today (16/04/2020).
Rats, a recurring symbol in the artists works, can be seen energetically causing havoc in the scene - no doubt driven up the walls by their time spent pent up inside. One rat can be seen crossing off the days spent in lockdown in lipstick on the wall, others are knocking the bathroom mirror to one side, hanging on the light pull, swinging on a towel ring and stepping on a tube of toothpaste. Precious toilet paper, this year’s hottest new commodity, is strewn across the room.
The artwork is the latest piece since he created a mural in Bristol in February showing a young girl firing a slingshot of red flowers and leaves on Valentine’s Day.
My wife hates it when I work from home appears to be a mixture of stencil and charcoal with the rats interplaying with the objects in the scene creating a wonderful depth and sense of movement.
The humorous take on lockdown continues the long, established line of subversion and comedy used by the artist. Does his wife hate it when he works from home? It is impossible to know. However, waking up to a bathroom in such a state would certainly raise eyebrows from most partners.
