Banksy:Laugh Now
Laugh Now, 2002
Stencil spray paint on canvas
From a small series
60 x 50 cm (23.5 x 19.5 in)

‘Laugh Now' links to Banksy’s famous ‘Monkey’ series, often accompanied by the threatening message ‘Laugh now, but one day we will be in charge’. The monkey is depicted carrying a sandwich board.

It has been argued that Banksy might be referring to Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, which states that human beings share their lineage with apes. If this were to be the case, ‘Laugh Now’ could be read as an ironic comment on the decadence of civilisation.
