‘Water Lily’ is a recurring theme in Lichtenstein’s work: inspired by Claude Monet, Lichtenstein produced a series of works with water lilies in the early 1990s. The artistic dialogue between Monet and Lichtenstein was an ongoing one: having appropriated Monet’s Rouen Cathedral series, Lichtenstein had realised a series of work depicting the same subject.
Monet and Lichtenstein had in common an obsession for sight, for perception. The actual representation served only as a medium which allowed the two artists to experiment with the eye and its capabilities. Lichtenstein’s art pieces which are part of the ‘Waterlilies’ series are part of collections such as LACMA and prestigious private collections.
Appreciated for its dialogical nature, ‘Water Lily’ is a conversation between Modernism and Postmodernism.
