Damien Hirst:Oleoylsarcosine
Oleoylsarcosine , 2008
Etching on 350 gsm Hahnemuehle paper
Unique, signed
85 x 62.5 cm

An example of Hirst’s most recognisable series, the ‘Spot’ series, this work is also part of the ‘Pharmaceutical’ series, hence its name. The unique work was hand-painted, and no other examples of it exist.

The process behind it is designed to emulate the mechanical production of images, a concept which has always fascinated Hirst. Drawing on Goethe’s studies on colours, and on Turner, as well as Impressionists and other luminaries of the classical art world, Damien Hirst works with the idea that a sequence of colour, however random or carefully designed, ultimately results in a work of great harmony, as its visual impact on the viewer raises questions regarding the order of the world, and the cosmos itself.

Commenting on this series of works, the artist is on record as stating: ‘it’s an assault on your senses. They grab hold of you and give you a good shaking. As adults, we’re not used to it. It’s an amazing fact that all objects leap beyond their own dimension.’
