Dating back to 1995, this ‘Spin’ painting is part of Damien Hirst’s beginnings as an established artist.
Produced by means of a mechanical process, this piece is of pivotal importance in the evolution of Hirst’s personal conceptual style. When asked by Gagosian in New York in 1996, for his first solo show with the gallery, which way the 'Spin' paintings should be hung, he answered that they should have been spinning.
Whilst many other series have contributed to Hirst’s current status as a celebrity artist, the 'Spin' series regarded as one of the first examples of the artist’s success, making artworks from this series extremely sought-after.
