Make way for the new generation.

Internationally renowned Goldsmiths University is holding their annual MFA Postgraduate Degree Exhibition this week beginning Friday, 15 July – Monday, 18 July located at their South London New Cross campus. On display is an eclectic spectrum of work in various media, both traditional and new, where over 60 artists have created and curated their own spaces showing a mix of painting, installation, photography, film, performance, and digital based works.

The Andipa team was present last night at the Private View (Thursday, 14 July), to see what the next generation of artists were up to and specifically, to see the work of up-and-coming British Contemporary artist William Mackrell, whom Andipa has worked with on several projects.

Installed across several multi-story buildings, you could easily spend the entire 4 days exploring the vast amount of work. Mackrell’s installation is located in the Laurie Grove Baths Building and while it might take a second to find his room, it’s well worth the search. Embracing the Goldsmiths philosophy of shifting expectations in terms of what art might be and what it might stand for, Mackrell challenges the notions of space and functionality through subtle yet intricate details with powerful effect.

Entering Mackrell’s space, we see (and hear) two carefully positioned holes on the left wall of the otherwise clean white cube room. The curious holes echo a reverbing melody reminiscent of listening to the sound of the sea in a shell, instantly transporting you from the space to a faraway place. It’s not exactly obvious through the disconnect but music is powered by a record player placed on the opposite side of the room.

A series of grey-scale wall-mounted etchings on aluminium are the perfect expression of Mackrell’ s minimalist composition combined with his awe inspiring detail work. A trance like video installation titled ‘Breaking a Dance’ completes his work and shows the versatility of Mackrell’s work.
